Karl Doss

Director, Access to Legal Services
Since August 2013, Karl A. Doss has served as the director of Access to Legal Services for the Virginia State Bar, where he is the administrator to the Access to Legal Services Committee and coordinates the VSB’s access to justice initiatives involving matters of pro bono, civil legal aid, and indigent defense and serves as the administrator for Virginia.freelegalanswers.org. He was also recently appointed to the Supreme Court of Virginia Access to Justice Commission and serves as the chair of the Commission’s Pro Bono Coordinating Consortium as well as a member of the Commission’s Pro Bono and Outreach and Education Committees. Before joining the staff at VSB, Mr. Doss served as associate director of training for the Coalition for Juvenile Justice (2013), director of training and professional development for the National Legal Aid & Defender Association (2009-2012), director of the Department of Judicial Programs in the Office of the Executive Secretary of the Supreme Court of Virginia (2006-2008), director of training and human resources for the Virginia Indigent Defense Commission (2003-2006), deputy public defender for the Norfolk (VA) Public Defender's Office (2002-2003), staff attorney for the Children’s Law Center in Brooklyn, NY (2000-2002), referee of family court in Hennepin County District Court, Minneapolis, MN (1997-2000), assistant county attorney (prosecutor) in Hennepin County Attorney’s Office (1990-1997), and assistant Hennepin County Public Defender (1987-1990). Mr. Doss has been a presenter at numerous trainings and continuing legal education programs on the subjects of pro bono, indigent defense leadership and management, criminal law and justice policy, client interviewing skills, juvenile justice, attorney ethics, and diversity in the law. He received his J.D. from the University of Minnesota School of Law in 1986 and his B.A. in Political Science/Sociology from Tulane University in 1983.
